Beware The Sketchy Door-To-Door Home Security Salesman

This is the time of year when door-to-door home security salesmen are at their busiest. Not .only is the weather ideal in the GTA at this time of year but summer is also the season for burglaries. When it comes to door-to-door home security salesmen there is one thing that I have to say, caveat emptor.

I installed a home security system for a buddy of mine a couple of months ago. He called me the other day and told me that his wife had a visit from a gentleman that claimed that the security company had transferred all of their contracts to the company that he represents and that all he required was a couple of signatures in order to put the transfer through. I told him that no such thing had occurred and that the salesman was trying to scam his wife into signing with their service.

I am not saying that all companies that run door-to-door sales of security services are dishonest; however, you should definitely keep your eyes opened. It is important to be cognizant of the shady pitch when they fire it at you.

These characters will generally be well-dressed, amicable and typically travel in teams of two offering “free” home security systems. They like to troll the neighborhoods during the weekdays and their favorite targets are the elderly and stay-at-home moms. If “the mark” doesn’t have a home security system then the pitch might go something like the security company is looking to get a foothold in the neighborhood so their offering a couple of families free security equipment and installation in return for allowing the company to post their sign on the family’s lawn. They might just give you a shtick about there have been a number of burglaries in your neighborhood and ask to have a look at your doors and windows and then hit you with the free installation. Of course, if “the mark” does have a home security system then the salesmen might do just what they did to my friend’s wife.

It is important to understand what these salesmen are offering you when they say “free.” Nothing is free. The cheap equipment and installation might be free; however, the long-term contract requiring you to pay big monthly fee for home monitoring is anything but free.
