In many ways, bringing a new neighbor a housewarming gift can do more for the security of your home than the most advanced locking systems, cameras and motion detectors. Most communities host a neighborhood watch program but if yours doesn’t than you should certainly consider talking to your neighbors and putting one together.
Still recovering from the enormous downturn in the economy, many communities are suffering from an unfortunate increase in burglaries and crime in general. In thinking about the security of your home, it is important to put yourself in the place of a burglar. Before you even think about investing money in a security system, take a walk around your immediate neighborhood and see if there are any things that might catch the eye of a potential burglar. Are the streets well lit at night? What kind of traffic does the neighborhood get both at day and night? Are yards lit at night? Are there people that neglect to collect newspapers and mail? These are some of the things that burglars will look for when casing a neighborhood.
One common trick utilized by burglars when casing a neighborhood is to pose as salesman and go from door to door looking for potential high-value marks and weaknesses in security. The best thing to do in such cases is to report any such suspicious activity to the police. While the would-be burglar would not necessarily get arrested for anything, they will understand that those streets have eyes and ears and it might be more worthwhile looking elsewhere.
